Ferrari's Ristorante Cavallino
Ferrari's legendary trattoria is back after two years. Chef Massimo Bottura and architect and designer India Mahdavi teamed up to reimagine Ferrari Ristorante Cavallino in Maranello, Italy. Rather than being known for who dined there, ahem, Enzo Ferrari, the new version hopes to become a destination for food and design lovers.
Cavallino opened in 1950 across the street from the automaker's factory in what used to be a stable and farmhouse, and has since represented the automaker's deep affinity for Emilia-Romanga for decades. A favorite of Prancing Horse founder Enzo Ferrari, who would drink and dine VIP clients, Formula 1 drivers, and even royalty in the place. He liked it so much he ate there twice a day until he died in 1988. When its most famous regular passed away, the restaurant kept going, but eventually closed down in 2019.
Cavallino is back thanks to Bottura and Mahdavi. While staying true to the restaurant's roots, the Parisian architect redesigned it for 2021. A high ceiling, terracotta floor and oak-paneled walls adorned with Prancing Horse-patterned wallpaper and memorabilia define the main room. According to WSJ, Enzo's own room has been fully restored, so that it looks just like it did when the auto legend ate there every day.
"It's an encounter between Enzo Ferrari and Massimo Bottura," Mahdavi told the Journal earlier this month.
Cavallino's menu has been entrusted to head chef Riccardo Forapani. After training at Bottura's Osteria Francescana, declared the World’s Best Restaurant in 2018, the chef has been presenting his own modern take on the region's cuisine, like ricotta filled tortellini served in butter and sage, mora Romagnola pork ribs, and zuppa inglese, a traditional layered dessert.
